The Catlins is the last unexplored region of the South Island and maybe New Zelaand.
Thomas's Catlins Lodge and Camp Ground offers camping sites, affordable backpacker and hotel rooms, based in Owaka on the Southern Scenic Route. From here, you can explore the charms of the Catlins.
The Lodge is in a 100 year old Hospital with a history of medical uses, from hospital, to maternity, to nurses home and finally as an old peoples home. Now it is the home to the Lodge and Camp Ground.
Some guests have said the Lodge has "ghosts". Why don't you check in and see for yourselves? Let us know what you find!
The Main Wing includes the dormitory beds, mainly four people per room. These spacious rooms have two single beds and a set of bunks. Also in this area is a large games room with a full sized pool table, darts and a piano. All complimentary for guests. This area hosts a large guest kitchen and a separate dining room.
The guest kitchen offers fridges, freezer, microwaves, ovens, jugs and toasters. All pots, pans and cutlery are supplied so there is no need to bring any of your own dishes or cooking implements.
The Surat Wing is home to the new Ensuite rooms and the share bathroom rooms. The Ensuites have a rural outlook and are very quiet. This wing also has a small TV lounge and library and a small nook for your early morning cuppa!
The Lodge also has two great sunrooms, where you can curl up with a book.
Outside there is a very sheltered area for camping. The lodge offers 20 powered sites and about a dozen tent sites. These are located in the garden and are close to all the amenities. Campers are welcome to use all the lodge facilities at no extra cost, including the showers.
There are a number of outdoor tables and chairs for everyone to enjoy as well as the BBQ gazebo with a free BBQ.
The Lodge has a very extensive DVD collection, all available free of charge. We offer FREE WIFI for all guests.
The Lodge has lots of off street parking and places to store those who arrive on a bicycle. We are also Pet Friendly but just let us know first if you have a pet with you.
Thomas' Catlins Lodge and Camp Ground is a great place for groups, functions, parties and reunions.

Things To Do
The Catlins offers dense rain forests, bush walks with native birdlife, stunning coastal scenery and wildlife around this wild stretch of coast line from Kaka Point to Fortrose.
Owaka is one of the main service towns in the Catlins area and is a fantastic base to expore the Cathedral Caves, Nugget Point, Purakaunui Falls, Pounawea and Tunnel Hill to name a few.
There are some great coastal and bush walks, and the Catlins is also renowned for its lengedary surf breaks.
